Med School, Resilience, Identity, and the Sunk Cost Fallacy - Tyy_Rex

In this episode of the SciAnts Streams Women in STEAM 2026 series, we feature Dr. Tyy, also known as Tyy_Rex—a physician-turned-content creator whose journey highlights both the rigor of medical training and the importance of self-determination.

Dr. Tyy reflects on an early passion for science, sparked by interests in natural history, anatomy, and discovery, which ultimately led her through the demanding pipeline of pre-med education, medical school, and surgical training. However, despite years of investment, she recognized during residency that the path she had committed to was no longer aligned with her well-being or goals—an inflection point that required confronting the “sunk cost” dilemma and choosing a new direction.

The conversation explores her transition into Twitch streaming, initially as a response to isolation and a desire for connection, which evolved into a platform for mental health advocacy, science communication, and community impact. Viewers have credited her streams with encouraging them to seek therapy and access mental health resources—demonstrating that her impact as a physician extends beyond clinical settings.

Dr. Tyy also discusses the broader cultural and structural challenges within STEM and medicine, including rigid career timelines, gender expectations, and underrepresentation in fields like surgery. She emphasizes that these constraints are often socially constructed—and that individuals are not bound to a single prescribed path.

Throughout the episode, a central theme emerges: authenticity. By embracing her identity beyond the role of “doctor,” Dr. Tyy has built a space that blends humor, education, and vulnerability—demonstrating that scientific expertise and personal expression are not mutually exclusive.

This is a conversation about reclaiming agency, redefining impact, and expanding what a career in STEAM can look like—both inside and outside traditional institutions.
